It’s a difficult job and during my time as a SENCO, I have completed all of the tasks covered above; administration, interventions etc.
But the main aim of our jobs is how to move children with SEN forward. How best to accomplish this, should be our main aim. Class teachers usually want support with strategies to help them to achieve this. Unfortunately, the work of a SENCo can be so overwhelming with other paperwork, that we do not always have time to work with class teachers and support their work with SEN children.
This also means that a SENCO requires expertise in a range of areas.
How successful we move the children with SEN forward is for me what makes a wonderful SENCO. This should be evident in the progress they make and how well they can access the curriculum with the classroom. Our role should always have this aim in mind.
