I know this thread was started a while back, but I worked in a school with Third Culture students and over 85 different languages. We couldn’t ever assess them in their native language, nor find qualified assessors do to this. In any case, the assessments have only really been developed with English speaking people, and any results would have been lost in translation. Assessments suitable for EAL might be non-verbal assessments, such as BPVS. I noticed how the SENCO role is blending into EAL nowadays, so perhaps SENCO’s are expected to indulge in a Tefl course now?
