Hello, speech and language therapist here.

What is it that you are assessing? It would be worth considering speech, language and communication needs alongside attention as part of your assessments.

They don’t sound very ready for a sit down assessment, as such. When I have assessed children who struggle with working with working with adults, I often do lots of observation and informal work – this would include taking their lead, observing behaviour and writing down any language samples, seeing likes/dislikes/learning preferences etc. Also, it’s useful to get information from previous professionals and their parents. In itself, the fact that they struggled to access adult-led assessment is very telling and part of your observation’s purpose could be to give you some insight into what barriers there are to working with adults, and what steps can be taken to support them work towards this.

Hope that this helps!
