    I’d echo the thoughts on talking mats / objects of reference first if necessary – you have to teach them how to use them eg to request food from their lunchbox etc so they understand them. Makaton, if they’re keen to communicate, or ASC devices.

    You can make your own mats in Widget. I’d be cautious training children to use them to express safeguarding concerns. Because they likely won’t be everyday symbols describing tangible things eg “drink”, and if they indicate say pants do they mean their pants are uncomfortable or an adult did something inappropriate? How would you know?

    I would proceed the same way you would with a non verbal nursery pupil ie staff observation, medical issues etc
