    Hi Claire,

Functional skills are great in many ways. They make the work more relatable to the reluctant learner but there are downsides. I recently entered a young man with ASD, ADHD and SEMH for an English Functional skills EL3 exam. For the writing paper he was not allowed a scribe under any circumstances. A scribe is his normal way of working during the school day. He knows how to structure a sentence, he knows how to spell and he knows where to use punctuation but his writing is very hard to read. It feels like he is being judged on his handwriting and not his actual English knowledge.
