Re Kylie’s comment, I totally agree that using computers with coloured screens is the way forward but would also like to comment on the question of whether students need to have been formally diagnosed with visual stress. Assessors are no longer allowed to help students experiment with coloured overlays; instead we must refer them to behavioural optometrists for a formal specialist assessment. However, this is actually quite costly and therefore not an option for most students. I think therefore that restricting the provision of coloured overlays etc to those students who have a formal diagnosis of an SpLD or even who have screened positively might be kinder and less discriminatory.
