It absolutely depends on your school, and how well supported and managed you are.
I tried this with enhanced resource classes and it was ok one year and awful the next depending on the class profile (behaviour, mix of children, spread of ability etc) BUT I never got on top of the SENCO role completely, on reflection I think that was because as a school they were not clear about how they wanted SEN to look so I was always getting conflicting messages about what my priorities should be, or starting something then being told not to do it, or being able to introduce something but then getting it scaled back so it wasn’t effective all the time, or someone else taking over and changing what i was trying to do (so I’d lost autonomy) and then complaining I wasn’t taking responsibility for the thing they’d put in place….
