As a previous languages teacher I feel this is very wrong. As Amy said above, languages are compulsory at KS3 and also can be enjoyed by SEN students because there’s lots of listening and speaking. Also I have found that lots of weaker students like it, especially if you play interactive games with them and get them out of their chairs and up at the board. Anyway, the other point I wanted to make is that I now am SENCO in a SEMH school and a recent OFSTED inspector recommended that we introduce a language element here! 🙂
As for putting them back into language lessons after missing out – it can be done – I’ve had lots of students turn up in the middle of the year and pick up a language to a decent standard.
