We tried splitting by year group and found things got very messy. This is because we have LSAs who are leads under each SEND strand. This year I took on SEMH and Cognition and Learning and the other SENCo took on Communication and Interaction and Sensory. It works well for us although she has a lot of students with ASD under her remit. This can mean her role is a lot of fire fighting whereas mine is more strategic planning etc. It works well for us. I didn’t like year groups as I wanted to keep my students and also there were too many cross overs. I’d say the more senior person needs to work with ASD students if there are incidences where exclusion or suspensions take place etc.
