Home Forums Deferring a year for a Year 6 pupil Reply To: Deferring a year for a Year 6 pupil

As a secondary sendco i was recently approached by parents of a year 6 pupil in a similar position – their son had been kept back a and they wanted him to join our year 7 a “year late”. Our school policy (whether i agree or not)is that pupils have to be in their chronological year. Our sets are ability grouped (again controversial to some extent)and so we would make allowances for our weaker ability pupils.

Whilst not relevant particularly for the pupil Issues also arise with the DFE (im told) when the pupil doesn’t sit GCSEs in line with their age group so secondary schools are more reluctant to accept pupils out of their “correct” year group.

I’m not saying that i agree with either of the above when we are aiming for inclusion but may be reality.
