We had a pupil from out of county who was in yr3 but age wise should have been in y4. We immedialy put him in the correct class for his age after I phoned county and they advised this was fine as long as there was evidence of parental permission. County said that it is unusual but it does happen occasionally. Our EP supported correct age and as he was moving in from out of town, was a good opportunity for a fresh start.

What happens when he gets to y11 and he has a chronological age of 17? What about the emotional iimpact of not moving up with your friends/ peers?

I have sent pupils up to secondary working within y2. They have to make provision. I’ve also had pupils working within y2 with more complex needs transition to a specialist setting for MLD. I wouldn’t consider retaining a year as I feel there are few benefits overall.

Hope that helps!!
