I know it is off topic, but I must point out that candidates are allowed a computer reader in GCSE English where reading is being assessed.

The logic for this access arrangement is that a human reader can’t avoid reading with understanding, so is not allowed. A computer reader cannot read with understanding, so is simply decoding the text. As decoding skill is not being assessed, the computer reader does not help with the higher order reading skills being assessed, so is allowed. JCQ points out that candidates given a computer reader are working “independently.”
