There are many reasons why students with genuine needs might not be brought to your attention before year 10, for example, able students who have met teacher targets previously, despite struggling. People with ADHD, dyspraxia or autism all complain of not taking in what they’re reading, even when they have no reading accuracy issues. This can be to do with vacillating focus. The benchmark isn’t whether X had been a student’s normal way of working since year 7 but whether they are being disadvantaged in assessment by examination because of their particular profile of learning difficulties.
